Proprietary Energetic Technologies
Next-generation energetic formulations developed in-house by CIE Defense — engineered for predictable performance, material integrity, and precision energetic utility.
02.3
Overview
CIE Defense has developed two proprietary next-generation energetic formulations that represent a significant advancement in demolition and breaching technology. HEX™ and ADX-E™ are purpose-engineered formulations developed through CIE Defense's in-house energetics RDT&E program — designed from first principles to address the performance, stability, and workability requirements of modern tactical and demolition applications, rather than adapting legacy materials to new requirements.
Both formulations reflect a development philosophy centered on predictable behavior, mechanical integrity, and precision energetic utility. Where legacy explosive compounds were developed to maximize raw energy output, HEX™ and ADX-E™ are engineered for controlled, repeatable performance — prioritizing the characteristics that matter most in operational and R&D environments where consistency, material reliability, and precision placement are non-negotiable requirements.
CIE Defense's proprietary energetic technologies are available for law enforcement, military, and government procurement programs. Full technical specifications, validated performance data, SDS, and procurement requirements are discussed directly with qualified agencies and licensed organizations under NDA. HEX™ — High Energy eXplosive
HEX™ is a high-performance demolition explosive engineered as a next-generation energetic formulation optimized for controlled demolition, breaching, and advanced energetic integration. HEX™ utilizes a chemically inert polymer binder system designed to prioritize formulation stability, controlled energy release, and long-term material consistency — while retaining high detonation performance. The design philosophy emphasizes predictable behavior, mechanical integrity, and precision energetic utility rather than legacy explosive replication.
HEX™ Details
Key Characteristics:
- Energetic Core: PETN-based high-energy core — nominal ~82% PETN content delivering high brisance and rapid energy release
- Binder System: Advanced non-energetic polymer binder — mechanical cohesion without contributing to energetic sensitivity, supporting enhanced formulation stability and handling predictability
- Aluminum Enhancement: 4–5% aluminum powder incorporated for enhanced blast impulse and metal acceleration effects
- Detonation Velocity: ~7.86 km/s (Chapman–Jouguet, R&D data — pending independent laboratory validation)
- Initial Density: 1.60 g/cc
- CJ Pressure: ~25.9 GPa (R&D data — pending independent laboratory validation)
- Stability: Enhanced thermal and chemical stability compared to energetic binder systems
- Consistency: Designed for controlled, repeatable lot-to-lot performance for operational and R&D workflows
Product Forms:
- HEX™ Bulk — Homogeneous bulk material for custom shaping, demolition charge fabrication, warhead development, and R&D integration programs. Supplied in sealed, customer-specified quantities.
- HEX™ Block — Molded solid blocks engineered for uniform density and structural integrity. Configurable for standard demolition charge handling and evaluation.
Applications:
- Tactical demolition and breaching operations
- Structural access and disruption
- Authorized UXO, IED, and hazardous material destruction
- Warhead and energetic payload R&D — fragmentation, EFP, and hybrid systems
- Authorized training, testing, and evaluation programs

ADX-E™ — Advanced Demolition eXplosive, Enhanced
ADX-E™ is the enhanced formulation within the ADX family — a modern, next-generation plastic explosive engineered as a distinct class of demolition-grade energetic materials. ADX-E™ utilizes a refined energetic matrix incorporating nitrocellulose as the explosive binder, delivering both structural cohesion and energetic contribution to the overall detonation profile. The enhanced formulation is 20% softer and more workable than the original ADX blend — improving ease of shaping, surface conformity, and precision placement while maintaining predictable, repeatable performance for tactical and R&D applications. ADX-E™ is purpose-built for modern breaching, disruption, and energetic integration programs.
ADX-E™ Details
Key Characteristics:
- Energetic Core: Modern aluminized PETN formulation with 5%+ aluminum — optimized for enhanced blast effects and temperature stability
- Binder System: Nitrocellulose explosive binder — delivers both structural cohesion and energetic contribution to the overall detonation profile
- Detonation Velocity: ~7,200 m/s nominal
- Density: ~1.53–1.55 g/cc — softened matrix without significant density loss
- Operational Temperature Range: −40°F to 165°F (−40°C to 74°C)
- Workability: Fully pliable at approximately 120°F (50°C) — enhanced low-temperature handling due to modified binder system
